The present invention relates to a process for preparing tetrachloroethylene by heat chlorination of C1 - C3 hydrocarbons or chlorinated derivatives thereof, without catalyst in two reaction areas, using carbon dichloride, which consists in that the chlorination of C1-C3 hydrocarbons or chlorinated derivatives thereof in the first reaction area is done, by feeding a total amount of Cl2, followed by the chlorination in a second area of the vessel ; in order to maintain the reaction temperature in both reaction areas, using the total amount of carbon tetrachloride, resulting from the process, which is recirculated or carbon tetrachloride from external sources.
