PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having high practical reliability in which no cracks are produced in a reinforcing layer even when shock is given to the tape in a deck running system. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium (10) is obtained by forming a magnetic layer (2) on one surface of a nonmagnetic substrate (1), by forming the reinforcing layer (5) on the other surface in such a manner that the elongationεr in the longitudinal direction when the reinforcing layer (5) fractures is larger than the elongationεm in the longitudinal direction when the magnetic layer (2) fractures, and if necessary, by forming a protective layer (3), a lubricant layer (4) and a back coat layer (6).
