PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming device and an image reading method capable of improving skimming efficiency, properly performing detection and correction of orientation of an original at the time of image reading as a scanner itself, and improving operability and productivity as a scanner. SOLUTION: This image forming device is provided with an original orientation detecting means for detecting the orientation of a read original from an image signal obtained from a CCD, and at the time of skimming through an original for reading an original image by using the movement of an original by an original carrying means, a lamp is irradiated at the time of the movement of a mirror stand until the original reading position, and the original image is read, and this image is transmitted to an original direction detecting means 176, and the first and following original skimming is operated after the detected result of the orientation of the original is outputted from the original orientation detecting means 176, and at the time of storing the read original image in an image memory, the orientation of an image is corrected by an image rotating means based on the detected result of the original orientation detecting means 176, and then the image is written in the memory.
