PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for discriminating a type of an optical recording medium in the sequence to put focus servo control on. SOLUTION: The method comprises a step for making a focus search by applying a driving current to the focus coil of an optical pickup, which is equipped with a first optical means corresponding to the optical recording medium of a first thickness and a second optical means corresponding to the optical recording medium of a second thickness, and which is also provided with a plurality of divided sensors for receiving reflected light from these optical recording mediums; a step for detecting a first plural detection signals obtained by the first optical means and a second plural detection signal obtained by the second optical means during the focus search; and a step for measuring the time interval between the first and the second plural detection signals and discriminating the type of the optical recording medium on the basis of the comparison of the measured time intervals.
