PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively suppress spreading of a leaked magnetic field from the magnetic gap part in the traveling direction of a magnetic recording medium in the in-plane perpendicular recording method and to obtain higher recording density. SOLUTION: The device is provided with a first magnetic head 10 for recording only and a second magnetic head 20 for reproducing only. The core thickness W2 of the second magnetic head 20 near the reproducing gap G2 is controlled to be equal to or less than the shortest recording wavelengthλmin, and the core thickness W1 of the first magnetic head 10 near the recording gap G1 is made larger than the core thickness W2 of the second magnetic head 20 near the reproducing gap G2 and to a larger value not to produce saturation of the magnetic flux.
