PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem where much leakage flux exists between an armature and a moving segment, so that thrust is little although a large current is made to flow, and a magnetic attractive force is applied in one direction between the armature and the moving segment, so that a large load is applied to retaining mechanism of the moving segment and strain is generated in the structure. SOLUTION: This linear motor is provided with the moving segment which can move relatively to an armature, one magnetic pole tooth row which is coupled magnetically with one magnetic pole of the armature and divided and arranged in a first stage and a second stage in the direction almost vertical to the transfer direction of the moving segment, and the other magnetic pole tooth row which is coupled magnetically with the other magnetic pole of the moving segment and divided and arranged in a first stage and a second stage in the direction almost vertical to the transfer direction of the moving segment. Between the magnetic pole tooth rows disposed on the one and the other first stages and the magnetic pole tooth rows disposed on the one and the other second stages, the moving segment is arranged.
