An electrochemical system comprising rigid support members having enclosures which are in flow communication with respective electrode members. The cells are assembled as a contiguous stack of cells similar in appearance to a filter press. Each cell includes an anode electrode with an anolyte chamber adjacent to the anode electrode, and a cathode electrode with a catholyte chamber adjacent to the cathode electrode. The support members include a first and second rigid enclosure which have an inlet and outlet being in flow communication with the anolyte and catholyte chambers respectively. The electrical connections between adjacent cells are made using double electrode plates 110. In the illustrated embodiment, a mono-polar electrolyser uses double electrode plates where the planar double electrode plates connect cells in adjacent cell stacks. The mono-polar characteristics of each cell are maintained by the presence of an air gap 28 isolating each adjacent stack of cells connected by each double electrode plate.
