A setting activator, used in an injection grout for sealing and/or consolidating soil and construction materials and consisting of one or more alkali metal compounds and optionally an aluminium compound, is produced from (i) aluminium in solution in soda (Na2O) or potash (K2O); (ii) anhydrous sodium aluminate, NaAlO2; (iii) aluminium sulphate, Al2(SO4)3.nH2O, which preferably contains 8 wt.% alumina; or (iv) the double sulphate of aluminium and potassium. Also claimed is an injection grout for sealing and/or consolidating soil and construction materials, the grout containing particulate mineral reagent, calcium-containing reagent and the above activator. Further claimed are (a) a process for sealing and/or consolidating soil and construction materials by injection of the above injection grout; and (b) a process for treating contaminated soil by injecting the above injection grout to immobilise the contaminants.
