The roll bar system, especially for a convertible automobile, has a bar (1) over the whole vehicle width formed by two swing units (2,2') and a lateral yoke (3), to slide between a retracted rest position and an extended working position. The swing units are attached to the vehicle body (6) by linkages (4,4'), with linkages (5,5') at the yoke. In the retracted position, the swing units and the yoke are parallel to each other, and are extended to lie at right angles to each other when activated.
