Powdered mixture for the manufacture of a sintered iron alloy

Powdered mixture (I) for the manufacture of a sintered iron alloy comprises: (a) boron, boron oxide, boron sulphide, boron halide, boron hydride, boric acid, borate or tetrafluoroborate; (b) 0.1-2.0 wt.% graphite; and (c) iron. Also claimed are: (1) the manufacture (A) of a sintered iron alloy comprising compressing (I) to form a green compact and sintering the compact in a non-oxidising atmosphere at 1000-1250 deg C; (2) manufacture (B) of a sintered alloy comprising preparing a powdered mixture comprising iron and 0.1-2.0 wt.% graphite, preparing a solution of a boron compound as in (a) above, impregnating the solution into the green compact, and sintering in a non-oxidising atmosphere at 1000-1250 deg C; (3) manufacture (C) of a sintered iron alloy comprising compressing a powdered mixture of iron and 0.1-2.0 wt.% graphite to form a green compact, presintering the compact at 300-950 deg C, impregnating with a soln. of a boron compound as in (a) above, and sintering in a non-oxidising atmosphere at 1000-1250 deg C; and (4) modification of an iron alloy containing carbon comprising preparing a solution containing a boron compound as in (a) above, impregnating the solution into the iron alloy and heating in a non-oxidising atmosphere at 1000-1250 deg C
