Process gas contains oxygen, hydrogen and an inert gas. An Independent claim is also included for a process for laser beam welding using the process gas. Preferred Features: The oxygen amount in the process gas is sub-stoichiometric with respect to the reaction 2 H2 + O2 --> 2H2O. The inert gas contains nitrogen, argon and/or helium. The process gas containing hydrogen or hydrogen and inert gas is mixed with air.
