A method of forming a supported bag (10) is provided. The method comprises the initial steps of providing a sheet of flexible, bag-forming material (52) and laminating a relatively rigid, substantially planar expansion insert (12) to the sheet. The sheet then passes through a pair of rollers (64) and (66) which folds the sheet along a fold line (70) so as to form an underlying portion (72) and an overlying portion (74) which encompasses the planar expansion insert (12). A sealing station (76) seals together the underlying and overlying portions so as to define, in combination with the insert (12), a supported bag (10). The resulting supported bag (10) is then cut from the sheet at a cutting station (78). The invention further provides a supported bag comprising an expansion insert (12) and a bag portion extending from the insert, wherein the expansion insert (12) is pre-laminated to the bag portion and the bag portion is a non-pre-formed bag portion. |
