The method involves utilizing a magnetic permeability measuring device comprising a permeability magnetic detection probe connected to a magnetic permeability displaying and calculating case. The device is calibrated from a reference hollow mechanical piece containing a known number of short-blasting balls. A measurement of the permeability is carried out in the hollow mechanical piece to be controlled. A change of magnetic permeability is verified, and a presence of the short-blasting ball at a measuring point and the number of the short-blasting balls at the measurement point are deduced. An independent claim is also included for a device for detecting, localizing and counting short-blasting balls in a hollow mechanical piece.
