A filter press (1) for filtering suspensions comprises a packet of vertically aligned filter plates (8) that, in pairs, form a filter chamber between them. Each filter chamber is delimited on both sides by a filter cloth (14) that, starting from the lower ends (13) of the filter plates (8), is guided, while covering the filtering level, over a cross-member (15) arranged above the filter plates (8). The cross-member (15) can be displaced in a vertical direction when adjacent filter plates (8) are transferred from a closed position, in which the suspension can be introduced into the sealed filter chamber, into an open position, in which the filter plates (8) have an emptying space (12) between one another in a horizontal direction. The filter cloth (14) adopts a cambered shape when in this position. In addition, the filter press (1) is provided with an ejecting device, which is provided for ejecting filter cakes (31) adhering to the filter cloth (14) and with which the filter cloth (14) can be displaced in an oscillatory manner. In order to reliably detach the filter cake (31) from the filter cloth (14), the invention provides that the cross-members (15) can be displaced in an oscillatory manner in a horizontal direction.
