The invention relates to a double transgenic animal expressing simultaneousl y the insulin gene or cDNA and the glukokinase gene or cDNA directed by a promoter or fusion of promoters enabling the expression of insulin in a musc le and to the utilization thereof in the development of therapeutic approaches for diabetes mellitus. The invention further relates to an expression vector or vectors enabling joint expression of said chimeric genes in muscular cell s. Said vectors can be a plasmid, a viral vector or non-viral vector.
