The inside diameter of the discharge tube (11) can be larger than 1.2 times the value of the diameter of the plasma channel. The starting electrode (16) can be a part of the reflector (30-33) or can be electrically connected to the same. The flash capacitor (42) can be rated for a charging voltage of greater than 370 volts, preferably greater than 400 volts.
