The invention relates to a method for producing tungsten carbide by gas phas e direct carburetting of a powdery, tungsten-oxide containing starting materia l, whereby the starting material is reacted with a reaction gas at an increased temperature. The inventive method is further characterized in that the tungsten-oxide containing starting material is heated to at least 600 ~C and is then reacted with a reaction gas while slowly increasing the temperature to a maximum temperature of up to 850 ~C. The reaction gas used CO or a CO/H~2 gas mixture that contains up to 20 vol.- % of H~2.
