The window element has a frame construction (113) fitted with 2 relatively spaced glazing panels (100,101), with an illumination device, employing a number of light sources (102), incorporated in the frame construction for supplying light to the intermediate space between the glazing panels. The light can be deflected through 90 degrees for passage through the internal and/or external glazing panel, at least one of the glazing panels having a light dispersion effect and printed, etched, sand-blasted, or engraved on one side. The light sources are provided by LED's or surface-mounted devices.
