PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrostatic actuator which can control a shift by a low voltage in a wide range, and an ink jet recorder which can be driven by a low voltage with the electrostatic actuator used therein. SOLUTION: There are arranged at least a diaphragm 4 and a counter electrode 5 set opposite to the diaphragm 4. According to the driving method for the electrostatic actuator, the diaphragm 4 is shifted by an electrostatic force generated by impressing a voltage to a region between the diaphragm 4 and the counter electrode 5, and the shift of the diaphragm 4 is returned by lowering a voltage between the diaphragm 4 and the counter electrode 5. The voltage higher than a voltage whereby the diaphragm 4 and the counter electrode 5 are brought in static contact with each other is impressed, and moreover, the voltage is impressed to lower the voltage before the diaphragm 4 comes into contact with the counter electrode 5.
