A supported membrane comprises a micro-etched foil, or foil featuring small diameter holes, eg. in the order of 50 - 100 micrometers, onto which is deposited a metal alloy, such as an alloy of copper and either vanadium or palladium. The foil may be made of stainless steel and there may be gaps of wound 150 micrometer between respective holes. Also disclosed is a method of manufacture of a supported membrane comprising providing a micro-etched foil and depositing a metal alloy onto the foils substrate. The method may involve the use of a replicating material such as cellulose acetate. The metal alloy may be sputtered onto the foil substrate. A membrane manufactured by this technique may be used as the diaphragm in a fuel reformer suitable for separating hydrogen from other gaseous products during a reforming reaction such. The membrane may have applications related to the hydrogen fuel cells of electric cars or the like. The structural strength of the foil substrate may permit the use of reduced amounts of palladium, ie. in an alloy rather than pure, for the filtering of hydrogen, thus reducing the cost of the filtering process. |
