PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To overcome the problem in a device inevitably getting large-sized for the purpose of improving performance of an optical demultiplexer utilizing a diffraction grating because wavelength dependence of an outgoing angle from the diffraction grating is small. SOLUTION: In an optical element making use of an end face of a periodic multi-layer structure as a light incident plane or a light emitting plane, a high resolution spectral demultiplexer is realized without making the device large- sized by utilizing excellent directivity of light leaked out from the multi-layer structure and large wavelength dependence of the angle. Furthermore, light emitting efficiency is improved by arranging a reflection layer on one surface of the multi-layer structure.
