PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a diffraction grating type polarizing element in which the residual stress or distortion produced when a dielectric material having double refraction is filled with another dielectric material (overcoat material) can be reduced and peeling of the supplied dielectric material can be prevented, and to provide a method for manufacturing the element. SOLUTION: The diffraction grating type polarizing element has a diffraction grating structure formed by alternately disposing two kinds of dielectric regions on one surface of a substrate 1, the dielectric regions at least one of which is made of a dielectric material 2 having double refraction. In the polarizing element, at least one layer of an intermediate layer 3 having a different composition or structure from that of the dielectric materials 2, 4 is inserted on the interface between the dielectric material 2 having double refraction and the dielectric material 4 in the other dielectric region laminated on the substrate 1. By using a polymer material having oriented molecular chains for the dielectric material 2 having the double refraction, the intermediate layer 3 can be easily formed, and that is, the obtained diffraction grating type polarizing element has excellent characteristics with less voids or defects.
