PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently producing phthalaldehyde(s) from readily available raw materials. SOLUTION: This method for producing phthalaldehyde(s) comprises reacting at least one compound selected from o-xylylene glycol and o-xylylene oxide with nitric acid in the molar ratio of the latter to the former of about 0.2-20 to form the objective phthalaldehyde(s).
