Adjustable differential group delay generator incorporating a polarisation dispersion compensator

The group differential delay mechanism has a polarization separator (3) with an optical input signal (S1) dividing the signal into two components (Sd,Sq) with orthogonal polarization states. There is an adjustable delay unit (4) in one arm. The adjustable delay unit has a phase adjustable modulator (10) applying phase modulation to the carrier wave of the first signal. A dispersive delay (12) provides chromatic dispersion. A delayed signal (S3) is produced.
