PURPOSE: A banner activated digital TV receiver and a method of operating the digital TV receiver are provided to combine stored advertising messages with regular digital television contents received from a digital television broadcasting service provider and output the combined messages and contents. CONSTITUTION: A banner activated digital television receiver(30) having a digital TV function is provided. A plurality of advertising messages are stored in a storage device(36). The digital television receiver receives video data from a digital television broadcasting service provider(38). The digital television receiver outputs the plurality of advertising messages and the received video data. When a predetermined number of the advertising messages are output, the digital TV function of the digital television receiver is disabled.
