PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for industrially advantageously producing a 2(5H)-furanone derivative safely and efficiently. SOLUTION: This method for producing the 2(5H)-furanone derivative represented by formula (II) (R1, R2 and R3 are each hydrogen atom or an alkyl group, an aryl group or an aralkyl group which may contain a substituent group) is characterized in that a furfural derivative represented by formula (I) (R1, R2 and R3 are each as mentioned above) is reacted with hydrogen peroxide in water.
