PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect abnormality in a furnace in early time even in the case abnormality happens at any position in the furnace by excluding such nonstationary work as to exert adverse effect on the operation and also, to realize the stable operation by always monitoring the whole in the furnace. SOLUTION: The method is for monitoring the furnace condition of a separating furnace 2 for heating matte M and slag S produced in a smelting furnace, by dipping electrodes 10a-10f supported with electrode holders 21a-21f each vertically movable into the molten metal in the furnace from the upper part, and supplying electric power into these electrodes 10a-10f. The furnace condition in the separating furnace can be monitored by continuously monitoring the change with time at the positions of the electrode holders 21a-21f.
