PURPOSE: A liquid crystal medium which is low in viscosity and has a shorter reaction time is provided, which is used in a liquid crystal display of an active matrix addressed system, in particular a liquid crystal display using an active matrix containing a thin film transistor or varistor. CONSTITUTION: The liquid crystal medium is a nematic liquid crystal medium and comprises (a) a dielectrically negative liquid crystal component which is one or more compounds of formula 1, (b) a dielectrically negative liquid crystal component of formula 2 and 3, and optionally (c) a dielectrically neutral liquid crystal component of formula 4, and optionally (d) a dielectrically positive liquid crystal component of formula 5. In formula, R11 is a 1-7C alkyl, 1-7C alkoxy or 2-7C alkenyloxy group; R12 is a 1-7C alkyl or alkoxy group or a 2-7C alkenyl, alkenyloxy or alkoxyalkyl group; one of Z11 and Z12 is OCF2 or CF2O and the other is a single bond; and n is 0 or 1. |
