PROJECTION LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY AND ITS ADJUSTMENT METHOD

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection liquid crystal display and its lighting method which can improve the display of a black level and a contrast. SOLUTION: A projection liquid crystal display 1 is provided with a liquid crystal display element 33 to modulate a light beam, polarizing plates 31 and 35 arranged on both sides of the liquid crystal display element 33, and optical compensation elements 32 and 34 to compensate an optical phase difference caused by the liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal display element 33. The centering control of each optical compensation element 32 and 34 can be performed in a surface orthogonal to the optical axis 10 of a light beam made incident on the liquid crystal display element 33. Each optic axis P1 and P2 of the optical compensation elements 32 and 34 can be made coincident with the rubbing direction or the like of the liquid crystal display element 33 by the centering control.
