PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thickener containing no nitrogen atom, substitutable for a conventional fatty acid dialkanolamide. SOLUTION: This thickener is characterized by comprising an alkyl glyceryl ether having >=80 wt.% content of anα-monoalkyl glyceryl ether and/or anα-monoalkenyl glyceryl ether represented by general formula (1) [R1 is a 12-16C nonsubstituted straight-chain alkyl group or a 12-20C straight-chain alkenyl group].
