PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a self-assembling monomolecular film in which a free space formed by the mutual aggregation of self-assembling compounds is reduced enough so that the free space in which an azobenzene unit can be isomerized is secured, surface properties can be changed efficiently and uniformly, and when the azo linkages of the self-assembling compounds lose their isomerization function by reduction, etc., the function can be recovered easily. SOLUTION: The self-assembling monomolecular film which is formed by the adsorption of an azobenzene derivative expressed by formula (1) on a base material and a method for producing the film are provided.
