PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new transition metal compound as a catalyst component forα-olefin polymerization capable of obtaining an olefin polymer having high molecular weight and high melting point at a high yield. SOLUTION: This new transition metal compound is expressed by the general formula (Ia) (where R1, R2, R4 and R5 each represents a hydrogen atom, a hydrocarbon group having 1 to 10 carbons, a silicon-containing hydrocarbon group having 1 to 18 carbons, or a halogenated hydrocarbon group having 1 to 18 carbons; R3 and R6 each represents a saturated or unsaturated bi-valent hydrocarbon group having 3 to 10 carbons forming a condensed ring to a five- membered ring to which it bonds; R7 and R8 each represents a hydrocarbon group having 1 to 20 carbons, a halogenated hydrocarbon group having 1 to 20 carbons, an oxygen-containing hydrocarbon group having 1 to 20 carbons, an amino group, a nitrogen-containing hydrocarbon group having 1 to 20 carbons or a sulfur-containing hydrocarbon group having 1 to 20 carbons; m and n are integers of 0 to 20; Q denotes a bonding group; and M is a group 4th to 6th transition metal in the periodic table).
