PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chromatic dispersion compensating fiber which keeps a ratio of a chromatic dispersion to chromatic dispersion slope in a fiber in 250 nm or less in the S-band of a step index type single mode fiber having wide bandwidth suitable for high-speed transmission, and thus minimizes the cumulative chromatic dispersion average of wavelength from 1,450 to 1,550 nm in an absolute value for a prescribed transmission distance. SOLUTION: The fiber has a chromatic dispersion of -40 ps/(nm.km) or less, a chromatic dispersion slope of -0.16 ps/(nm2.km) at a wavelength of about 1,475 nm and an effective area of 14 μm2 or more in the circumference of the same wavelength. The fiber is a 1,475 nm single mode. The fiber has rectangular refractive index distribution provided with a buried section and a ring. The fiber can compensate the chromatic dispersion and the chromatic dispersion slope for the transmission system of the S-band using a step index type single mode fiber as a line fiber.
