Apparatus for thermally treating raw meal comprises a grate (18) for receiving large pieces of fuel (19) arranged below the connection (17) between a rotary oven waste gas channel (11) and a tertiary air channel (16); and a device (22) for sluicing the large pieces of fuel to the grate arranged on the side facing away from the rotary oven waste gas channel outside of the tertiary air channel. Both channels are at the height of the grate to bridge the distance between the channels and are connected each so that the combustion residues can be removed. Preferred Features: The apparatus further comprises a sluicing chamber (22) placed on the tertiary air channel at the height of the grate and connected to the lower side of a shaft (23) storing the fuel.
