PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an ink jet recorder in which print speed in the case the print start position of next band data is unknown is enhanced. SOLUTION: The ink jet recorder comprises a carriage (c) mounted with a recording head for ejecting ink, a carriage drive means for reciprocating the carriage (c) in the main scanning direction, and a section for controlling operation of the carriage (c) to stop at a specified position. If a carriage stop position E2 after ending print operation of current band data has not reached a reference carriage stop position K set at a specified position within main scanning width of a recording medium P5, the carriage (c) is stopped at the reference carriage stop position K, otherwise it is stopped at the carriage stop position E2 after ending print operation.
