PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a bright projection image in a liquid crystal projector as a projection mode type image display device. SOLUTION: The microlens array 106 is disposed in such a manner that when the refractive index n1 of an adhesive 113 which forms one side of the lens curved face, the refractive index n2 of base glass 112 which forms the other side of the lens (n2>n1), and the maximum angle θmax of the angle θformed between the incident light from a light source which enters the lens curved face from the base glass 112 having the refractive index n2 and the normal line of the lens curved face satisfy the relation of (n2/n1)×sinθmax>=1, the light from the light source enters the microlens 116 from the adhesive 113 having the refractive index n1.
