PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the production cost of a belt type continuously variable transmission T and smoothen power intermission. SOLUTION: Clutches 31 and 31 are provided in the groove side faces 14a and 14b on fixed and movable sheave sides corresponding to the bottom section of the belt groove 14 of a drive pulley 11 to cut off power transmission between a belt 21 and the drive pulley 11 due to the running on of the belt 21. Each clutch 31 has a fixed plate 33 fixed to a fixed sheave 12, a rotary plate 34 which is rotated by being pressed by the belt 21, and many rollers 35, 35,..., which are arranged between both plates 33 and 34 and extends obliquely at a specified angle θ to a radial direction of the rotary plate 34, and the rollers 35, 35,... are supported turnably and spacedly by a holding plate 36. When the belt 21 contacts the clutch 31, each roller 35 is made to slide while rolling and being held by the holding plate 36 due to the rotation of the rotary plate relative to the fixed plate 33 along the rotation direction of the rotary plate 34, which is oblique to the rotation direction. |
