The machine tool has first tool guide means as movable portal support (22) with movable first slide carriage (36) on a machine frame (2) for guiding the tool to a first guide position. The guide means can be moved in a first plane along a first and second direction whilst a second tool guide means (30, 42) for guiding the tool to a second guide position (43) are movable in a second plane along a third and fourth direction and independent of the first. A workpiece holder (34) on the machine frame is designed so that the workpiece can be guided between the first and second guide position. The second guide means is a movable portal support with movable second slide carriage.
