Method for manufacturing an optical fiber preform by directing a flow of fine glass particles from a deposition burner onto a rotating elongated target preform, wherein a predetermined amount of a high thermal diffusivity gas (e.g. oxygen, hydrogen, helium, argon, nitrogen) is admixed with a flow of glass precursor material before injecting said glass precursor material into the central duct of the burner, in order to increase the heat transfer from said flame towards said flow of glass precursor material. The volume fraction of said high thermal diffusivity gas is less than 0.60 parts (<60% vol) of total volume of the obtained mixture, preferably 0.25 to 0.45 volume fraction parts (25-45% vol); most preferably the admixed gas is oxygen. <IMAGE> |
