The method and equipment for removing asbestos from material in which it is held involves the material sprayed with a rinsing fluid. The rinsing fluid is then conducted in its contaminated state through a cleansing installation where any asbestos fibers in it are removed. The cleansing procedure is such that the material can then be safely reused. The equipment employed is a mechanical shovel (1) with a rotor (2), such as a sieve drum, and a rinsing space (3). The rotor holds the rubble (4) which contains asbestos. The rinsing space is filled with rinsing water (5) and has a removable side wall (6). Under the fluid surface is a pump (7), so that after rinsing the water can be fed away through an appropriate conduit (8). The rinsing space also has a feed conduit (9) for more or less clean rinsing water.
