TREATMENT OF RUBBER TO FORM BITUMINOUS COMPOSITIONS

Rubber, particularly crumb rubber from the recycling of tyres, is processed to effect partial or high levels of dissociation of rubb er vulcanate network, in particular to form bituminous compositions in which th e treated rubber, carbon black and other additives relea sed are stably dispersed. Bitumen, hydrocarbon oil and liquid rubber are used to eff ect penetration, swelling and compatibilization of the r ubber particles, following which thermal energy and mechanical energy are applied to initiate breakdown of the vulcanized structure of the rubber particles and the formation of at least partially dissociated rubber vulcana te network. Such treated rubber may be further reacted a nd combined for employment in the production of stabilized polymer modified bit umen composition.
