PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic payment system and method which make it possible to achieve a cashless coin laundry. SOLUTION: The automatic payment coin laundry system includes a user 1 having a cellular phone 2; a washing machine and drying machine 3 installed in the coin laundry 11 having an electronic lock device 4 for locking a lid, a timer 5 for the electronic lock device 4, and a packet transmission terminal 6; a central management center 8 having a server 9 for managing usage conditions, etc., of the washing machine and drying machine 3; and a public line network 7 to which the cellular phone 2, the packet transmission terminal 6, and the server 9 are connected. The locking/unlocking of the electronic lock device 4 is performed by an electronic lock transmitted from the server 9 to the cellular phone 2 of the user 1. The server 9 owns operating data of the coin laundry 11 established in an appropriate location, and transmits operating data, etc., of the washing machine and drying machine 3 in the coin laundry 11 to the cellular phone 2 of the user 1.
