PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lathe constituted as compactly as possible. SOLUTION: The lathe provided with a first work spindle 44, at least one first tool slide 50 having a tool carrier 134 and at least one second tool slide 52 having a tool carrier 136 is improved so as to be constituted as compactly as possible. The first work spindle 44 is arranged on a spindle supporting side surface 28a of a first supporting section 40, a second work spindle 94 is arranged on a spindle supporting side surface 28b of a second supporting section 90, a first tool slide 50 is held on one of slide supporting side surfaces 32a and 34a of the first supporting section 40 and a second tool slide 52 is held on one of slide supporting side surfaces 32b and 34b of the second supporting section 90.
