The invention relates to a tensioning device (1) for a traction mechanism, especially a belt drive. The inventive tensioning device comprises a tensioning roller (2) that rests against the belt, thereby tensioning it. The tensioning device further comprises means for controlling and/or regulating belt tension in accordance with at least one detected parameter that represents a measure of belt tension.
