PURPOSE: A method for controlling operation of refrigerator is provided to vary compression capacity of a compressor. CONSTITUTION: A compressor(100) has variable compression capacity varied by needed freezing load to be operated at high capacity for cooling a refrigerating compartment(60) and a freezing compartment(70) simultaneously and at low capacity for cooling either of the refrigerating compartment or the freezing compartment. The compressor has a frequency converter such as an inverter or is a linear compressor. If the compressor is an inverter compressor, the compressor is operated at high frequency for high cooling performance and at low frequency for low cooling performance. If the compressor is the linear compressor, the compressor is operated at high stroke for high cooling performance and at low stroke for low cooling performance.
