2-Phenylpyran-4-one derivatives (I) are new. 2-Phenylpyran-4-one derivatives of formula (I) are new. R1 = alkyl, NR4R5; R2 = alkyl, 3-7C cycloalkyl, pyridyl, thienyl, naphthyl, tetrahydronaphyl, indanyl, phenyl (optionally substituted by 1 or more halogen, alkyl, trifluoromethyl, hydroxy, alkoxy, methylthio, amino, alkylamino, dialkylamino, hydroxyalkyl or hydroxycarbonyl); R3 = methyl, hydroxymethyl, alkoxymethyl, 3-7C cycloalkoxymethyl, benzyloxymethyl, hydroxycarbonyl, nitrile, trifluoromethyl or difluoromethyl, CH2-R6; R4, R5 = H, alkyl; R6 = alkyl; and X = single bond, O, S, methylene. Independent claims are also included for: (A) the preparation of (I); (B) a compound of formula (III); (C) a compound of formula (VI); (D) the use of a compound of formula (XVI) in the preparation of compound (I); and (E) a composition comprising (I) and a carrier or diluent.
