An electronic textbook reader system including a portable unit for replacement of paperback textbook for students, a diskette as the storage medium of encrypted textbook contents, a card which serves a key to access certain portion of the contents, as well as an electronic wallet for purchasing electronic books online. The reader unit has multiple displays for text contents and colour graphs and pictures. The audio system can read out the text in multiple languages and multiple dialects. A modem and an expansion port for communication with other device and/or network. The rights management relies on issuing of keys to individuals. Only the contents one has paid for are authorized to assess for a certain period of time.
