PURPOSE: An accurate detecting of misfire is carried out by detecting problem in a secondary side of an ignition coil. CONSTITUTION: A secondary side voltage detecting portion(50) detects voltage induced in a secondary coil of an ignition coil, and outputs it. A reference voltage generating portion(60) generates a reference voltage. A comparator(70) compares the detected voltage of the secondary side voltage detecting portion and the reference voltage of the reference voltage generating portion, and outputs 'high' level voltage signal if the detected voltage is larger than the reference voltage. An electronic control unit measures a duration time of the 'high' level voltage signal, and decides a normal ignition state if the measured time is over a reference time, and a misfire state if the measured time is less than the reference time.
