PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a safe and economical method for industrially producing a hydroxylactone by using a halogenic acid. SOLUTION: This method for producing hydroxylactone represented by the formula (2) [wherein R1 is a 1-4C alkyl group and when p in the following compound represented by formula (1) is 1, q and r are each 1 or q is 2 and r is 0] comprises reacting the compound represented by formula (1) [R1 is a 1-4C alkyl group: p is an integer of 1 or 2] with an oxidizing agent composed of a halogenic acid represented by the formula M(XOm)n (wherein M is a hydrogen atom or a metal; X is a halogen atom; m is an integer of 1-4; n is an integer of 1-3) or its salt and a reducing inorganic compound.
