The method of treatment of a motor vehicle exhaust gas cleaner (10) involves increasing the temperature of collection of nitrogen oxides (16) as far as a temperature equal to or superior to the sulfur purging temperature of sulfur held in the nitrogen oxide collector. The exhaust gas composition is modified as it passes the nitrogen collector to be reduced or oxidized.
